Don’t Let Spring Sneak Up On You….
13 DecWith all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, spring planning often gets pushed to the back burner…. and before we know it, spring is here and the list of things we meant to get done is no where finished.
Insert the inner qualm of every greenhouse owner: But it just snuck up on us!
This year, instead of letting that daunting list get tossed in the garbage, make a reasonable list that you know you can actually accomplish crossing items off of. Don’t put every one of your heart’s desires down, it will only lead to disappointment… instead make a list that is feasible. Make it cross-off-able. Realistically you know not everything will get done, in our economy there is just not enough time, money or man power. But the feeling of being able to cross off 20 items on a 25 item list will feel that much more admirable versus crossing off 20 items on a 50 item list. You would be amazed at how much more accomplished you feel, so much so, that the list becomes more a of game and a challenge than a mortal enemy.
This type of list making can apply to any person, any situation, any work environment…. but right now, look at it from the greenhouse industry perspective. You need to reasearch new varieties, trial new combinations, get moving on your company’s social media or lack there of, update your greenhouse plastic, install more energy efficient heaters, etc. The list can go on and on and on… in order to keep up with the direction everyone else in our industry is moving you have to be at the top of your game. But this type of list making requires willpower; the willpower to not scribble down every thought that comes to mind, the willpower to not become overwhelmed just looking at your list, and the willpower to have the confidence in yourself that you will get those things done when they need to be done. New York Times writer John Tierney said, “The most successful people… don’t use their willpower as a last-ditch defense to stop them from disaster. Rather, they conserve willpower by developing effective habits and routines in school and at work so that they reduce the amount of stress in their lives. They use their self-control not to get through the crises but to avoid them.”
As the holiday season approaches and spring planning is starting to move from your thoughts to paper, the days become longer and longer for our industry….but do not fret just yet. After you have made your list, you need to move yourself from decision-maker to coach. Coach yourself and your team to research those new varieties and bringing a sample tray in, to dedicate time to setting up a facebook and twitter account, to installing new heaters. Make your list achievable, delegate projects and tackle them one by one and then move on. Remind yourself and your team, it can be done and it will be done and we will do it together.
“Unless facts have dramatically changed, don’t revisit your decisions. Don’t keep pondering if you did the right thing. When you retread old ground you are wasting mental energy and potentially causing decision fatigue. Be confident you did the right thing, move forward. You’ll be more effective and have a happier year ahead.”
The best thing about our industry as a whole, as it continues to move forward, is that we all understand and deal with the same variables that go into spring planning and there is no shortage of information on dealing with them. Your greenhouse is not alone in this race to the top. As an annual wholesale supplier, we are here to help you cross-off items on your list as best we can. Our company is committed to improving how we can better serve you…. we want your business to grow and thrive, because without you our growth as a company would not be possible. Let us know what varieties you are interested in using and learning about, which varieties you wished we carried or are looking to add last minute.
List-making is a funny topic for a greenhouse to blog about but its where great ideas start and innovative ideas are what make our industry ever-present in this world.
We hope your upcoming season’s list is one that has aquires a lot of lines through it.
